The dictionary definition of a flag is, a piece of cloth, usually rectangular, of distinctive color and design, used as a symbol, standard, signal, or emblem. That means therefore that a flag can be referred to as a symbol, a standard, a signal, or an emblem, depending on its use.

Throughout history, Flags and Banners have represented the beliefs and purposes of those who carry them. Flown as signals, rallying points, and standards of identification, flags define battle lines and give direction and encouragement. They declare the victory and identify the one in authority. Ultimately, flags are an outward expression of the praise that is in our hearts and as believers wave Flags during a worship experience, it outwardly declares before the body of Christ that ‘The Lord is our Banner.’

In a worship service, they are used for God’s people as a visual tool on which to focus. The congregation is invited to participate fully in the worship experience. Flags and Banners declare a time of the battle in spiritual warfare, God’s love, His grace, holiness, and power. As the Spirit of God (the watchman) directs, the waving of Flags and Banners will open the “spiritual gates” of heaven allowing the Holy Spirit to flow freely among His people with healing, deliverance, and encouragement. Flags and Banners are vital to the Body of Christ. They make a statement – a statement of our worship, our praise, our warfare, and a statement that reflects our work with the Lord. They are a form of visual worship and they make a powerful statement to the non-believer, and this makes them a silent witness in ministry that speaks volumes.

Children are drawn by active worship and the beauty of using Flags and Banners is the fact that the exciting and colorful nature naturally draws the children in, and in the end, they learn and understand the reason behind the use of the colorful flag and/ or Banner for worship. Eventually, they are drawn closer to God.

Flags are Biblical and have historical roots from way back when. They are worship tools, as much as liturgical dance, instruments, and prophetic art are. They boldly declare a partnership with God, because they are an outward expression of faith. Some scriptural references that show the Biblical basis of flags are:

• So shall they fear the name of the LORD from the west and his glory from the rising of the sun. When the enemy shall come in like a flood, the Spirit of the LORD shall lift up a standard against him. (Isaiah 59:19)
• Set up the standard upon the walls of Babylon, make the watch strong, set up the watchmen, prepare the ambushes: for the LORD hath both devised and done that which he spake against the inhabitants of Babylon. (Jeremiah 51:12)
