Flags in Corporate Worship

by

And when he had taken counsel with the people, he appointed those who were to sing to the Lord and praise him in holy attire, as they went before the army, and say, “Give thanks to the Lord, for his steadfast love endures forever.

2 Chronicles 20:21-22

Believers gather to honor and glorify God in corporate worship. During this sacred moment, hearts unite in surrender, praise, and worship. In recent years, flags have gained traction in corporate worship. Flags add a new dimension to corporate worship, whether waved or displayed. The Spiritual atmosphere is super-charged, invoking a deeper connection with God.

Through the lens of scripture,

  • In the Old Testament, we find references to banners being lifted high in praise and victory. In Exodus 17:15, after the defeat of the Amalekites, Moses built an altar and called it “The LORD is my Banner.” This signifies not only a physical victory but also a spiritual one, acknowledging God’s sovereignty and protection over His people.
  • In Isaiah 59:19, we’re reminded that “When the enemy comes in like a flood, the Spirit of the LORD will lift up a standard against him.” The term “standard” here can refer to a flag or banner.
  • While the use of flags in worship may not be explicitly commanded in Scripture, it falls within the realm of freedom of expression and creativity. Romans 14:5 reminds us, “One person considers one day more sacred than another; another considers every day alike. Each of them should be fully convinced in their mind.” Similarly, individuals and congregations may differ in their approaches to worship, and as long as it aligns with biblical principles and edifies the body of Christ, diverse expressions should be welcomed and respected.

What are some of the roles of flags in corporate worship?

  • Banners and flags release movement

Flags and Banners are used in corporate worship as a visual tool on which believers can be able to focus. Besides adding pomp and color to worship, they add impact to the worship movement. They are a silent witness in ministry but they speak volumes to anyone who looks at them.

  • Banners and Flags are a powerful worship tool

Each dancer waves around a colored flag representing joy, love, purity, and any other type of positive attribute rejoicing in the Lord’s glory. They enlarge and extend our worship encouraging a deeper and broader experience.

Flags utilized in corporate worship possess the potential to function as potent tools for praise, symbolism, and engaging in spiritual warfare. When handled with respect and purpose, they can enhance the worship encounter, bringing individuals into deeper communion with God and promoting harmony among fellow believers. When Flags and Banners are lifted as a statement, it becomes a wave offering to the Lord. The diversity of colors represents the multiple dimensions in how our adoration can glorify God for his unique and phenomenally awesome character. It’s crucial to be mindful of the biblical principles underpinning this practice, acknowledging God’s supreme authority, proclaiming His triumph, and exalting His attributes of love and truth.
